In Nehemiah 9th chapter we read about the very compassionate God who loves His children and wants to bless them. In Neh 9:9 we read, "You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, And heard their cry by the Red Sea.”
God saw the affliction and also the cry of His people. In Egypt the Israelites were foreigners. Joseph came to Egypt as a slave and later on his family joined him because of famine in the land of Canaan. They lived in Egypt for More than four hundred years and by this time the kings and the people forgot what Joseph had done for them and for their county. The Egyptians started making their lives bitter as we read in Exo 1:8-14, “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land. Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. They built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel. So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage; in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.”
So the lives of the Israelites became very bitter and miserable but God saw their affliction and also heard their cry. He came for their rescue as we read in Neh 9:10-11, “You showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, Against all his servants, And against all the people of his land. For You knew that they acted proudly against them. So You made a name for Yourself, as it is this day. And You divided the sea before them, So that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; And their persecutors You threw into the deep, As a stone into the mighty waters.”
Even today when we cry out for help, He hears from heaven. He looks at our affliction and delivers us.
Not only did God deliver them but also led them through the wilderness never leaving them alone as we read in Neh 9:12-15, “Moreover You led them by day with a cloudy pillar, And by night with a pillar of fire, To give them light on the road Which they should travel. You came down also on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven, And gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments. You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws, By the hand of Moses Your servant. You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, and brought them water out of the rock for their thirst, And told them to go in to possess the land Which You had sworn to give them.”
Yes, He is a God who does not sit somewhere far away in heaven but who comes down and walks among His children. He leads them, guides them, protects them and also provides for them, those who trust in His holy name. If this mighty God is your God, He will do the same thing what He did for the Israelites many thousands of years ago.
Tamso Ma Jyotir Gamaya
By Sherly Isaac
When I was in school, I studied about the growth of a plant from its seed. No matter how a seed falls to the ground if it finds favorable condition the seed germinates and the tendency is to grow towards light. Every time when I sow seeds in my garden, every time I wondered, how these little things start growing upward without fail no matter how much dirt is over it or no matter how the germinating parts are positioned, whether upside down or not, the tiny seeds know how to come out from the earth and to go toward light. How it happens? No one knows!
Every tiny seed wants to come out of darkness and to see light. In the same way it is every human heart’s cry to come out of darkness and to see the light.
There is a prayer in Hindu Scriptures that says like this: Asato ma sad gamaya Tamso ma jyotir gamaya Mritorma-amritam gamaya
Meaning of this small prayer is:
From untruth, lead me to truth From darkness, lead me to light From death, lead me to immortality
This is the cry of every heart on the face of this earth. Every person wants to come out of darkness that surrounds his/her life. This darkness, untruth and death are the result of our sin. From centuries people are searching for truth, light and immortality.
In one sentence Jesus answered the above prayer as we read in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus plainly said that, He is the way to heaven, the Truth and the Life. Only through Him one can reunite with the Father and there is no other way.
He also said that He is able to give eternal life as we read in John 3:15-16, "that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Today if you want to come out of darkness and want to see light, there is only one way that is Jesus Christ. Who is the Light Himself. If you want to come out of untruth to Truth, there is only one who is Truth that is Jesus Christ alone. If you want to have immortality, it is only possible to have that life through Jesus Christ who is the Life. There is no other way.
Come to Jesus and accept Him as your Lord and Savior, He will give you eternal life. He will forgive and forget all your sins and make you a new creation as we read in 2 Cor 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
