Aaron and Moses had one sister named Miriam. Even in her very young age we see her role as an informant for Moses. There was an order from the king that all the Hebrew male child be killed. But up to three months Moses’ mother hid him and when she could no longer hide him, she made a basket, placed the child in it and left it in the Niles River in the midst of reeds. “And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him” (Exo 2:4 ). Further we read in Exo 2:7-8, “Then Moses’ sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?" And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." So the maiden went and called the child's mother.”
So his own mother raised Moses for the daughter of Pharaoh on her expense. Later the Queen raised Moses as her son and he lived with her until he ran for his life. Now Miriam was a prophetess along with Moses and Aaron according to Exo 15:20. In fact she was the first woman in Scripture to be honored with the title “prophetess”.
Many years later Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses and their main argument was in Num 12:2, "Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?" And the LORD heard it.”
Two things are prominently visible here, Pride” and “Jealousy”. The thinking of Miriam was that she was something great and not in any way lesser than Moses in having God’s gift of prophesying. Second thing was Jealousy, the competition that Moses may not overrule his elder siblings. After all Moses was the baby brother! We do not know what was the reaction of Moses when he heard all those things but God reacted on behalf of Moses. When all these things were said and done, Miriam became a leper.
And we read in Num 12:13-14, ‘So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, "Please heal her, O God, I pray!" Then the LORD said to Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, would she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp seven days, and afterward she may be received again."’
God considered the act of Miriam as shameful as spiting on her face.
We see similar example in the first book of Bible, in the life of the first siblings, Cain and Abel. Bible says in Gen 4:3-8, “And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
When Cain saw that God did not accept his offering, he got very angry. His anger was shown on his brother because God accepted Abel’s offering. An example of cruel jealousy! The mentality that others should always stand one step backwards and they should not prosper in anyway.
Pride and jealousy destroyed the lives of Miriam and Cain. Miriam was a prophetess and yet somewhere inside her those ugly little bad habits were bubbling and it was disastrous for her life. Miriam’s life is a warning for every person who is saved, filled with His Spirit and walking with Him. Unless we completely surrender ourselves under the mighty hand of God it could turn out as disastrous. Peter says in 1 Pet 5:6, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,” Let us humble ourselves and surrender everything at His feet.

Recently in the New York subway station a twenty-year-old young man had seizers. He stumbled and fell over the railway track. There was another man standing with his two young daughters. This man looked toward the man on the railway track, he turned and saw his two young daughters and the oncoming train. According to one news report, "I had a split-second decision to make," Mr Wesley Autrey said later. " Do I let the train run him over and hear my daughters screaming and see the blood? Or do I jump in?" Leaving the girls behind, he opted for action. At first he tried to pull Mr Hollopeter back to the platform, but the confused and frightened man began to struggle. And as certain death roared towards them, Mr Autrey made a decision of breathtaking courage. Risking his life he pushed the man down into the space between the tracks and lay on top of him, wrapping his arms and legs tightly around him. With the train just feets away, he told the 20-year- old Cameron Hollopeter: 'Please sir, don't move. If you move, one of us is going to lose a leg or die.'
Next second, the first carriage thundered over them before the train screeched to a halt. On the platform, Mr Autrey's two young daughters were among the crowd who had seen the heart-stopping moment and feared the worst.
Then Mr Autrey's voice rang out from below, calling for silence. And as a hush fell, he shouted: 'Tell my little girls that Daddy is okay and the man is okay!' Delighted onlookers burst into applause. The train had missed the two men by inches - knocking off Mr Autrey's cap, but leaving them otherwise unscathed.”
What a story of courage. Mr. Wesley Autrey did not even think of his life but jumped on the railway track to save that young man’s life. There was no hope for the young man but death was certain. Had Mr. Autrey not responded, he would have been a dead man within minutes.
Lord Jesus did the same thing for us. Humanity is facing certain death because of the sins of the world. When Jesus saw that there was no other way for us, He left His heavenly abode and came down in this world to die for us. On the cruel cross He gave His life for us so that our lives could be saved from sins and hell fire. Bible says in Rom 5:6-8, “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Today, we can come out of the tracks of eternal death and have eternal life because of Jesus. If you want this life, please pray this prayer with me: Loving Jesus, I am a sinner. I am unable to come out of my addictions and sins. Please forgive and forget all my sins and cleanse me with your precious blood. Today, I accept you as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart and make me whole. Thank you for listening to my prayers and forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. I give you all the glory. I pray in Jesus name, Amen.
