Last month one of our friends came from India. As we were sitting and talking, my brother asked about those who lived in our neighborhood and sadly to our surprise most of the older generation had gone. Then just two weeks back we received the news that one of the aunties who was our next door neighbor passed away. It was hard to believe that it was just seventeen years back when we moved from there, they were all doing well and were full of life. It was hard to believe that those with whom we grew up, whom we called uncles and aunts are no more in this world.
And I started thinking that how fragile our lives are and how our lives are for a very short period in this world. It was just yesterday that we were kids and it would be just tomorrow when it may be our turn to depart from this world! Isn't it that close? Yes, closer than we think! But are we ready to meet our creator?
At times we worry so much about tomorrow. What will happen to us if we don't have money.... what will happen if we had no college degree... what will happen if we don't get a job... what will happen if our loved ones died... so many things to worry about and they cloud our minds with fear. But Jesus told a parable in Luke 12:13-21 as one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." But He said to him, "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?' So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
In this Jesus said that there is no use of accumulating so much of money, provision and possessions yet lose your soul. He cautioned people to get forgiveness of their sins and make things right with God. Then further Jesus told His disciples not to worry for life because, your heavenly father cares for you."
Once Reinhard Bonnke told his experience that, he was conducting a meeting somewhere. A teenage girl came to his meeting. Suddenly God spoke to him saying, tell her to repent of her sins and accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Reinhard Bonnke tried to tell her but she was not ready to accept Jesus. She made several excuses saying, she has a new boy friend and he will never allow her to accept Jesus... and she did not want to loose him... But the sad part was that she went without Jesus and on her way back she met with an accident and died on the spot. Just a few moments back she was offered eternal life but unfortunately she rejected it. She thought that she had many more years to live as she was very young. But the next moment is not promised for any of us. That is the reason why we need to be ready any time.
It is not difficult to get eternal life or forgiveness of our sins. We have to just come at the feet of Jesus repenting of our sins and accepting Him as our Lord and Savior. Then we have to live a holy life that pleases God.
You are the Salt of the World
By Sherly Isaac
Jesus said in Matthew 5:13, "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men."
Salt is the single most spice which cannot be replaced with any other thing. There are substitutes but not good enough as of salt itself. Salt does some great things in our lives.
1. Salt flavors: Without salt nothing tastes good. The very first thing salt does is that it brings great flavor in our food. Suppose you have a great looking food in front of you but the chef forgot to put salt in it. Do you think that you can continue eating with great delight? No, without salt it is difficult to eat food. Here Jesus compares His disciples with good flavoring salt. If you have given your life to Jesus, your life should be like flavoring salt which brings great flavor in others' lives. In this troubled world people need peace and joy, they need hope and that peace, joy and hope which only comes from Jesus.
2. Salt preserves: Salt has the great quality to preserve food and meat from spoiling. A life given in the hands of Jesus can save many lives from death and destruction and could turn many from their wicked ways. As Ezekiel says in Ezekiel 18:27-28, "Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. Because he considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die." Jesus wants us to preach His life giving message to the dying world.
3. Salt disinfects: I remember in my childhood days when we spotted blood sucking leaches or worms, we would put salt on them, and immediately they would curl up and die. Salt is that powerful and it could kill insects or germs in no time. When we live in this world which is full of sin and deceit, it infects us with various sins. But Jesus wanted His disciples to be spiritual disinfectors and bring those contaminated souls to Jesus where their sins could be washed away.
Today Jesus is calling us to become Salt of the World, would you come to Jesus and give your life to Him so that your life be a blessing for others?
