Last week we have seen how powerful praise of God is and how God could deliver us from our troubles when we praise Him. Once when Paul and Silas were going for prayer they came across a girl who was possessed with the spirit of divinity. She cried out saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour" (Act 16:17-18).
But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas, dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities, accused them falsely and got them to be thrown into prison through the magistrates. Further we read in Act 16:23-24, "And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks."
Paul and Silas were in the maximum security prison. They were in a new city and they did not know who could rescue them from the prison. There was no hope for them. But we read in Act 16:25-33 that, "at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed." And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here. He ran and fell down at the feet of Paul and Silas and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. The keeper of the prison took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And he and all his family were baptized.
Once again we see the power of praise. Paul and Silas were praying and praising God and a big earthquake shook the buildings and opened the doors of the prison and made them free. But more than that the whole family of the keeper of the prison came to the Lord and they were baptized.
This is the power of praise. Not only Paul and Silas were free from their bondages but also the whole family of the jailer was saved from eternal damnation. Even today we can see mighty deliverance in our lives when we praise God.
David says in Psalms 34:1-5, "I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise [shall] continually [be] in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear [of it] and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together. I sought the LORD, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces were not ashamed."
Those who look towards Him will never be ashamed.
Hope for the Hopeless - Part 12
By Sherly Isaac
In Genesis 14th chapter we read about the story of Lot the cousin of Abraham who was made captive and taken away by the kings of the neighboring countries. What happened was that in Sodom where Lot was living, the king of that place was attacked by the kings of the neighboring countries and when they took away the goods of Sodom they also took Lot captive with his goods.
It was a very serious and hopeless situation for Lot because five kings came together and attacked against Sodom and Gomorrah. Even the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled fearing their own lives. Even those kings could not withstand before the other kings. And Lot was just an ordinary citizen of Sodom. When no one was there to take care of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah who could have cared about Lot? Lot was in a completely impossible situation and there was no hope for him that he will ever be free from his captivity.
But Someone came to Abraham and informed the situation. So Abraham took his men and pursued them. We read in the Bible in Gen 14:14-17, "Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people. And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him."
Then further we read in Gen 14:18-20, "Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all."
Yes, there was a complete impossible and hopeless situation in front of Abraham but God turned it around by delivering his enemies in his hands and restored his cousin's life and possessions.
There is a God who can turn our hopeless situations around. He can turn impossible things into possibility, if we just trust in Him. Even today He is ready to come for our rescue. Are you going through a time of hopelessness or in an impossible situation? Come to Jesus, He can help you.
